Distinguished Alumnus Award

Benjamin S. Danielson, M.D. ’92, Res. ’95
Senior Medical Director, Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic

“I learned from families, most importantly, what it means to envision a space where diversity is really valued and equity is really championed. It’s about seeing those universal values come to life.”

Alumni Humanitarian Award

Michael M. Haglund, M.D. ’87, Ph.D. ’88, Res. ’92, Fel. ’95
Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurobiology, and Global Health, Duke University

“My way of giving back is to do this humanitarian work in Uganda. It’s meeting patients’ needs at all these levels — physically, surgically and spiritually. Making them better is what gives me the greatest satisfaction.”

Alumni Service Award

John F. McCarthy, M.D. ’90, Res. ’92
Assistant Dean for Rural Programs, UW School of Medicine

“My goal is to create an environment where people can see the value of rural medicine and can serve the needs of the WWAMI region. I’m creating the next generation of physicians to come out and make a difference. And I really believe that they’ll make it a better place.”

Alumni Early Achievement Award

Heidi Crane, M.D. ’98, MPH, Fel. ’04
Medical Director, Madison HIV Metabolic Clinic, Harborview Medical Center

“HIV is now a chronic disease; it’s not the acute fatal condition it was a few years ago. Patients with HIV get a lot of age-associated comorbidities much earlier than patients without HIV — things like heart attacks or strokes. I spend most of my time trying to decrease the impact of those conditions on patients.”
